Differs from all other Indian Puntius in having 7 branched dorsal rays (vs. 8), a round dorsal spot at the base of dorsal rays 3-7 (vs. larger and oblong, and on base of rays 4-8 in Puntius dorsalis), and a spot at base of caudal (vs. on the caudal peduncle in Puntius dorsalis) (Ref. 26698).
Inhabits hill streams, lowland swamps and dry zone rivers and tanks. Feeds mainly on green algae and detritus (Ref. 4832). Popular for aquarium purposes (Ref. 44325).
