Etymology: Crystallaria: Latin, cristallum = ice (Ref. 45335)cincotta: Named for Daniel A. Cincotta, for his devotion toward studies of fish diversity of West Virginia, including efforts toward conservation of the Elk River drainage and its diverse ichthyofauna.
Eponymy: Daniel Anthony ‘Dan’ Cincotta (d: 1952) is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Ichthyology at West Virginia University (2005–2018) (where Stuart Welsh is an assistant professor), and the Senior Ichthyologist with the Wildlife Diversity Unit of West [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Épines dorsales (Total) : 11 - 13; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 11 - 15; Rayons mous anaux: 11 - 13. Distinguished from populations of Crystallaria asprella of the Gulf Coast, Mississippi River and Wabash River by a combination of the following features: gape width larger approximately equal to or exceeding the inter-pelvic fin base width; a preorbital blotch distinctly separate from the anterior orbital rim; pelvic fins distinctly falcate in both sexes; cheek scale rows reduced (modally 2); opercle scale rows reduced (modally 2); number of midlateral blotches higher (modally 13); number of anal-fin rays lower (modally 13); number of dorsal-fin spines lower (modally 12); and scales below the lateral line higher (modally 11) (Ref. 74948).
