Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 8. Differs from other members of the A. erythrinus complex by having the following characteristics: scattered dark chromatophores on the caudal peduncle extending anteriorly as a band from caudal fin base at least to a vertical from ends of dorsal and anal fin rays; from A. erythrinus by having a shorter second dorsal fin spine not reaching base of third ray of second dorsal fin when depressed; from A. indicus by usually having 14 versus 13 pectoral fin rays; from A. susanae by having pigment on the dorsal surface of the caudal peduncle and on the base of the second dorsal fin; second dorsal fin spine of A. marquesensis usually longer than in specimens of A. indicus and A. susanae (Ref. 40822).
