Etymology: Heteroclinus: Greek, heteros = other + Greek, klinein, kline = sloping and bed, due to the four apophyses of sphenoid bone (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: This is not a direct eponym as the species and genus are named after the kelp Ecklonia in which they tend to live. The kelp was named after Christian Friedrich Ecklon (1795–1868) a Danish botanical collector. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

الأشواك الظهرية (المجموع) : 29 - 31; الأشعة الظهرية الناعمة (المجموع) : 5 - 7; شوكة شرجية: 2; أشعه شرجية لينه: 22 - 24. Pelvic fin rays thick, finger-like (Ref. 9002). Yellowish-brown, indistinct banding; usually a series of black spots low in dorsal fin (Ref. 9002).
Inhabits shallow coastal algae and kelp reefs (Ref. 9002).
