Etymology: Squalus: Genus name from Latin 'squalus' meaning shark (Ref. 6885, 27436); bassi: Named for Alan John Bass (Oceanographic Research Institute, Durban), for his valuable contributions to the taxonomy of elasmobranch fishes from southern Africa.

Minimum size at maturity of this species is approximately 73.0 cm for females and 65.0 cm for males. Females have between 4-9 pups per litter (size at birth is around 21.0-30.0 cm, with the smallest free-swimming neonates measuring 23.0-23.5 cm TL. Reported to feed mainly on bony fishes, cephalopods and crustaceans (Ref. 116246).
