Africa: Lake George and Kazinga Channel (Ref. 4983). Reported as introduced from the Aruwimi and Ituri (middle Congo River basin) in Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 106290).

Common near papyrus shores (Ref. 4983). Apparently it never occurs offshore. Seems to be a detritus feeder since plant fragments and insect larvae are predominant elements of the gut (Ref. 558).
