Duri punggung (Keseluruhan (total)) : 7; duri punggung lunak (Keseluruhan (total)) : 15; Duri dubur: 1; Sirip dubur lunak: 15 - 16; vertebrata, bertulang belakang: 26. This species differs from its congeners in having a gently oblique mouth at an angle of 51-58° (average 55°) to longitudinal axis of body, and in possessing a bright blue stripe running from nape to dorsum of caudal peduncle in male when fresh or alive (Ref. 84007).
This species normally swims in schools during high tide or hides in holes on muddy bottoms
mixed with pebbles around the roots of mangroves in river mouths. During low tide, they leave the holes and gather in schools in the mangroves at a depth of about 1 m (Ref. 84007).
