背面の脊椎 (合計) : 20 - 22; 背鰭 (合計) : 50 - 55; 肛門の骨: 3; 臀鰭: 49 - 51; 脊つい: 72 - 74. Belongs to the Macrognathus aculeatus species group but can be distinguished from all other species of this group by the following combination of characters: 8-10 rostral tooth plates; 20-22 dorsal-fin spines; and ocelli along dorsal fin developed as small irregularly arranged dark spots or absent (Ref. 83418).
