Distinguished from congeners by the following characters: large scales (34 to 37, commonly 35, in the lateral row), commonly 9 branched rays in both the dorsal and anal fins, a low number of vertebrae (33 to 36 total, commonly 35), a deep shortened 2nd infraorbital, a broad 4th infraorbital and a well developed 5th one with a widened lamellate portion (Ref. 50154).
