Africa: upper reaches of Blyde River, Limpopo system, eastern Transvaal, South Africa; previously known from the Treur and Sabie rivers.

Found mainly in small pools and behind rocks in flowing runs of clear mountain streams. Feeds on aquatic invertebrates, particularly insects. Co-exists with the small amphiliid catfish Amphilius natalensis (Ref. 6465). Breeds in early summer, with both sexes developing small tubercles on the head.
