See Steindachner (1911c:432, as Ancistrus stigmaticus) for a description of species, Muller (1989:894, fig. 4, tab. 3) for morphological data and illustration of the lectotype, Buck and Sazima (1995, as Ancistrus sp.) for ecological observations and illustration of living specimen, and Montoya-Burgos et al. (1997: fig. 4; 1998: figs. 3, 5, 6) for phylogenetic relationships based on 12S and 16S mitochondrial rRNA gene sequences (EMBL/GenBank Y08279, Y08327).
