Etymology: Fundulus: Latin, fundus = bottom; a peculiar name for a topminnow, coined for a bottom species of Atlantic coast being "the abode of the fundulus mudfish" (Ref. 45335).

North America: Lake Waccamaw in Columbus County in North Carolina, USA. Recently found in Phelps Lake in Washington County, North Carolina where probably introduced through its use as fishing bait.

Occur over sand in lakes, near and away from shoreline. Often found near vegetation. Swim a few inches below surface (Ref. 5723). Not a seasonal killifish. Easy to maintain in the aquarium (Ref. 27139).
