Etymology: Fundulus: Latin, fundus = bottom; a peculiar name for a topminnow, coined for a bottom species of Atlantic coast being "the abode of the fundulus mudfish" (Ref. 45335); pulvereus: From the word fundus=bottom, though fishes of this group are largely surface oriented; pulvereus=powdery (Ref. 79012).

Western Atlantic: From the lower Chesapeake Bay to the St. Johns River in northern Florida; In northern coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, from Alabama to Corpus Christi, Texas in the USA (Ref. 93252). Replaced by Fundulus confluentus in Florida (Ref. 93252).
