Eastern Atlantic: Portugal south to Democratic Republic of the Congo; Namibia to South Africa. Western Atlantic: USA to Gulf of Mexico; Brazil to Argentina. Western Pacific: Japan (Ref. 559), Australia (Ref. 7300) and New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068). Indian Ocean.

背面の脊椎 (合計) : 0; 背鰭 (合計) : 13 - 14; 肛門の骨: 0; 臀鰭: 15 - 17. Body iridescent silver in color (Ref. 3980). Slender body, caudal peduncle strongly compressed, extremely short. Photophores with a bronzy rim. Barbel pale, bulb and filaments yellowish (Ref. 37473).
Inhabits deep oceanic waters to more than 1,000 m depth (Ref. 4783). Meso- and bathypelagic (Ref. 58302).
