Feeds mostly on planktonic crustaceans (copepods, euphausiids, shrimps, amphipods) but also on small fish and various eggs and larvae (Ref. 1371). Caught mainly for reduction to fishmeal (Ref. 3383), trout pellets, fodder (Ref. 35388).
