Diagnosed from Iberocypris alburnoides and species of Squalius in Iberian Peninsula by having the following characters: body with dark longitudinal stripe; mouth subinferior; and anal fin with concave posterior margin (Ref. 59043).
Inhabits middle reaches of rivers, with abundant aquatic vegetation and moderate to fast current, with rocks or gravel bottom (Ref. 59043). A short-lived species which also occurs in rivers on the low plains, with little current and at high altitudes.
