Spinules on scales slender, conical, recurved, in irregular subparallel rows to somewhat quincunx pattern. Color is light brownish to gray-brown; with faint diagonal bands in some individuals. First dorsal fin with a dark band across the middle; the pelvic fins black-tipped, its base blackish.
