Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); ortegai: Name 'ortegai' in honor of ichthyologist Hernán Ortega Torres, for his significant contributions to the knowledge of the ichthyofauna of Peru and for being among the first to collect specimens of the new species described herein.
