Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335); dumonti: Name 'dumonti' in honor of lberto SantosDumont, the father of aviation, who visited Iguaçu Falls and help establish the Iguaçu National Park.

Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 11; Rayons mous anaux: 8 - 9. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: conspicuous dark-brown vertical bars present, blotches and spots along the sides of body; scaled isthmus; adipose fin present; five scales series below lateral line present; thin dark midlateral stripe present, occupying half scale height in vertical through dorsal-fin origin and one scale height on caudal peduncle; reticulated colour pattern present, with melanophores along the posterior edge of the scales; dorsal and pelvic-fin height, 19.1%-23.7% and 12.1%-18.1% of Ls and predorsal distance 44.5%-48.0% of Ls (137999).
