This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: incomplete lateral line with 4-7 pored scales, 21-24 scales in lateral series; 15 preanal scales; 11-13 predorsal scales; dorsal-fin origin positioned midway between tip of the snout and caudal-fin base; pelvic fin long, surpassing vent, reaching anal-fin origin; last simple dorsal-fin ray osseous and serrated posteriorly with 14-17 serrae, and length of 17.4-22.7% SL; eye diameter 27.0-33.6% HL; circumpeduncular scales 10; total vertebrae 34; intercalated scale row originates above and after the 5th scale of lateral line scale row; humeral spot absent, and a black spot on the 17th or 18th lateral series scale of the caudal peduncle (Ref. 130787).
