This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: scale rows around the caudal peduncle 15-18; branched dorsal-fin rays 9; comparatively robust, thick, broad, and downward curved predorsal spine; scale rows between the lateral line and dorsal-fin origin 8-10; and comparatively elongated predorsal spine 4.3-5.5 (Ref. 137756).
