Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); minibarbata: Name 'minibarbata' from the Latin words 'minimus' and 'babatus', meaning 'minute' and 'barbel', in allusion to the pair of tiny rostral barbels in this new species.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: well- developed mental adhesive disc present; scaleless region of the abdomen adjacent to the ventral midline extending midway to pelvic- fin insertions; very tiny or papilla- like maxillary barbels predorsal scales 8-15; thick caudal peduncle depth 0.9-1.3, mean 1.1 in its length; interorbital space width 40.1– 48.6, average 44.8, % of HL; mental adhesive disc not extending to the vertical through the posterior margin of eye; densely papillated; no W- shaped black mark along lateral and subdistal margins of the caudal fin; four scale rows below the lateral line (Ref. 137635).
