Etymology: tenebrosum:Name 'tenebrosum' from the Latin noun 'tenebrae' and suffix 'ōsum', meaning 'darkness, gloom', in allusion to the powerful toxin released by the new species under stress.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: ventral surface of trunk with small- to relatively large-sized coalescent platelets, forming a typical mosaic-like pattern; small, whitish to brownish yellow or pale yellow/beige blotches on the predorsal portion of body; two or three longitudinal dark brown or black stripes on flanks; fewer pale blotches on the body; large, smoothly arched dark brown or black patch present, extending from the anterior portion of parieto-supraoccipital towards the region of interopercle, transversally crossing the orbit and forming a typical mask-like blotch; mosaic-like pattern of plates entirely or almost entirely covering the ventral surface of trunk (Ref. 137472).
