Etymology: Protocobitis: Greek, protos = the first + Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); longibarba: Name 'longibarba' from Latin words 'long' and 'barba', meaning 'long' and 'barbel', referring to the species' long maxillary barbel.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: whole body, excluding head and abdomen, sparsely covered with minute scales; barbels elongate; 5-6 branched pectoral fin rays; four branched pelvic-fin rays; caudal-peduncle height 34.9%-58.6% of its length; head width 7.3%-10.3% of SL; head height 50.2%-80.6% of lateral head length (Ref. 133036).
This species are found in waters with muddy substrate. They primarily feed on algae and organic detritus (Ref. 133036).
