Etymology: Gigantactis: Greek, 'gigas' or 'gigantos' = gigantic + Greek, 'aktis' = ray (referring to the unusually long first dorsal-fin spine that functions as a lure in this genus) (Ref. 86949)paresca: Name from the Latin 'par' meaning pair, and 'esca' for bait, referring to the pair of baited appendages on the lure.

The metamorphosed female of this species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: illicium is relatively short (100-110% SL); with an enlarged non-light-bearing secondary esca approximately 75% from the insertion of the illicium, scarcely covered in fine filaments concentrated at the base and tip of the appendage; dentary teeth are moderate (longest tooth 3.8% SL), arranged in approximately three distinct longitudinal series with numerous additional teeth scattered between rows; the longest caudal-fin ray 35.8% SL (Ref. 131311).
