Etymology: Opistognathus: Greek, opisthe = behind + Greek, gnathos = jaw (Ref. 45335); to the very elongate upper jaw of the type species of the genus, Opistognathus nigromarginatus (Ref. 128653); aurolineatus: Name from Latin 'aurum' meaning golden and 'lineatus' meaning striped, referring to the three golden orange stripes on the sides of this species..

The species is distinguished by the following characters: a rigid upper jaw lacking flexible lamina posteriorly, extending about 0.9 eye diameters behind posterior margin of orbit; infraorbitals are very broad and robust, third infraorbital without suborbital shelf; D XI,12; A II,11; vertebrae 10+16; scale rows in horizontal series about 68 or 69; total gill rakers on first arch 39; when alive, it has 3 golden stripes on the body (Ref. 128653).
