Etymology: Hyphessobrycon: Greek, hyphesson, -on, -on = a little smaller + Greek, bryko = to bite (Ref. 45335); rheophilus: Species epithet from the Greek words ῥέος (rheos),) meaning urrent, rushing stream, and φιλέω (phileo) which means affection, love; in reference to the fast-flowing habitat of the new species; an adjective (Ref. 121599).

背鰭 (合計) : 9; 臀鰭: 16 - 19; 脊つい: 33 - 34. This species can be distinguished from its congeners by having an interrupted lateral line, besides a single perforated scale on caudal peduncle and a small dark spots on dorsal procurrent caudal-fin rays (Ref. 121599).
This species is often found near or at rapids with swift water currents and rocky bottoms. It can also be found in clear water, black water and relatively muddy rivers (Ref. 121599).
