Diagnosis: Small species, unique within other African smiliogastrin minnows by combination of the following characters: flexible dorsal-fin spine, moderately small scales with radial striation, 34-37 in lateral series, squamation in prepelvic region reduced to absent, incomplete lateral line, poorly developed nuptial tubercles on head of mature males, and characteristic life colouration (Ref. 126210).
