Etymology: Centrophorus: centr[um] (L.), prickle or sharp point; phorus, from phoreus (Gr.), bearer or carrier, referring to grooved spines on dorsal fins. (See ETYFish);  machiquensis: -ensis, Latin suffix denoting place: off Machico, Madeira, type locality. (See ETYFish).

Issue
Previously a synonym of Cantrophorus granulosus (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) according to Compagno 1984 (Ref. 247).
