Etymology: Photonectes: Greek, photos = light + Greek, nekton = swimmer (Ref. 45335);  filipendulus: Name from Latin words 'filis' for thread and 'pendulus' for hanging; referring to one of its distinguishing features - its weak ray in pectoral fin (vs. the rigid ray in P. margarita)..

Raios dorsais moles (total) : 16 - 19; Raios anais moles: 18 - 22; Vértebras: 59 - 62. This species is distinguished by the following characters: one very small and weak ray in P (sometimes missing?); uniserial praemaxillare dentition; vertebrae 59-62; postorbital organ constituting 2.9-3.6% (males) or 2.6% (females) SL; short or moderately long chin barbel, 3.0-9.2% SL for 13.8-23.5 cm SL; a small terminal bulb not protruding beyond stem, 2 or 4 equally small pigmented filaments on its tip (Ref. 125186).
