Adults prefer to inhabit fast flowing portions of creeks and rivers, although often found in deep, slow flowing pools. Juveniles stay mostly in riffle habitat. Occurs in clear waters over rocky substrates, often where algae are in abundance. Feeds mainly on filamentous algae that are scraped off rocks with its specially modified teeth (Ref. 119336).
