背的軟條 (總數) : 12; 臀鰭軟條: 8. Schistura liyaiensis is distinguished from other species of Schistura in having a combination of the following characters: back with 7-9 olive brown saddles with wide white-colored interspaces, appearing as white oval beads; flank with 7-8 bars; lateral line incomplete with 19-20 pores; dorsal fin with 4 simple and 8 1/2 branched rays; dorsal-fin origin with a dark olive-brown spot in fresh condition; caudal-fin base with a complete black bar; and a prominent processus dentiformis present (Ref. 112085).
Found in streams with swift current, big boulders, and rocks. Occurs together with the following fishes: Barilius sp., Devario sp., Pethia sp., Garra sp., and Glyptothorax manipurensis (Ref. 112085).
