Etymology: Cobitis: Greek, kobitis, -idos = a kind of sardine; also related with the voice Greek, kobios, Latin gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); damlae: Named for Mrs. Damla Erkakan.

Cobitis damlae is distinguished from its congeners by its arched mouth with three pairs of short barbels, dorsal fin with 6.5 branched rays, pectoral fin with 6 branched rays, pelvic fin with 5 branched rays, anal fin with 5 branched rays, caudal fin with n8+8n branched rays, body without pigment and completely scaled, and vestigial eyes (Ref. 106506).
