Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; algida: Name from Latin 'algidus' meaning cold; referring to this species being found in the cooler, deep upwelling waters (a first/second declension feminine adjective).

This species is distinguished by the following characters: a complete cephalic sensory-canal pore pattern (pattern I); dorsal/anal-fin formula usually 8/8; lower pectoral-fin rays branched; no 5th pelvic-fin ray; males with anterior dorsal spines filamentous; subcutaneous dark spot at center of caudal peduncle over preural centrum; male urogenital papilla black; in life, with red eye with gold specks (Ref. 97683).
