This species is distinguished by the following characters: pectoral fin rays unbranched; nasal capsule flushed with the dorsal surface of the snout and a posterior nasal opening in the form of a simple pore without a raised rim; 3 cycloid scales in the posterodorsal part of the cheek; cycloid scales in the midline and sides of the nape; colour pattern of fresh specimen - with an anterior yellow and posterior red half of the body, no dark spot or blotch over the hypural region, and with 4 small white spots on the dorsal and ventral midlines of the caudal peduncle (Ref. 94948).
