Etymology: Lampetra: lambo (L.), to lick; petra (Gr.), rock or stone, referring to their suctorial behavior (adults attach to rocks during nest building and mating). (See ETYFish);  lusitanica: -ica (Gr.), belonging to: Lusitania, ancient name of Portugal, where it is endemic. (See ETYFish).
