Distinguished by having the following characters: dorsal fin with 11-13 spines and 6-7 segmented rays; anal fin with 11-13 spines and 8-11 segmented rays. Differs from other congeners by rhombic shape of caudal fin in adult males (vs. round or lanceolate with filaments) (Ref. 93137).

Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Occurs in blackwater swamp area with pH 5.25, conductivity 7 µS/cm, and water temperature 26.8 °C (Ref. 93137).
