This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D III,25-27, usually III,26; A III,16; 16 circumpeduncular scales; 21-27 predorsal scales; horizontal scale rows above anal-fin origin 13-15 + 1 + 3 = 17-19; rounded caudal fin; upper part of pectoral-fin base with a dark spot; anterior part of body with yellow spots or markings (Ref. 89054).
Exclusively found in reefs subject to strong currents and frequent cold-water upwellings; associated with coral overhangs or large rubble pieces on hard bottom substrates. When approached, individuals retreat under the rubble or overhang (Ref. 89054).
