Etymology: Zaireichthys: Composed form Zaire river + Greek,ichtys = fish; the habitat of this fish (Ref. 45335);  kavangoensis: The specific name, 'kavangoensis', refers to the river from which the type series was collected (Ref. 86935).

Spine dorsali (totale) : 2; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 5; Spine anali: 0; Raggi anali molli: 9 - 12; Vertebre: 37 - 38. Diagnosis: This species differs from Zaireichthys conspicuus, Z. kunenensis, Z. lacustris and Z. maravensis in the narrower premaxillary tooth patch, less than 33% of mouth width; from Z. monomotapa in shorter lateral line and smaller number of rays in the dorsal fin and caudal fins, II,5 vs. II,6-7 and 11-13 vs. 14-16 respectively; from Z. kafuensis in the narrower head, smaller premaxillary tooth patch and smaller numbers of rays in median fins; from Z. pallidus in the shorter barbels, e.g. maxillary 1.3±0.1 times in head length vs. 1.0±0.1, steeper snout and in the colour pattern, rows of blotches vs. pallid with fine spots (Ref. 86935).
