This species of the H. aculeatus complex is distinguished by having a relatively strong and sharp tubercles on dorsal part of body; both inner and outer sphenotic tubercles are well developed; a row of tubercles almost always present dorsal to orbit; trifid principal tubercles on disk margin with anterior spinelet enlarged; dense arrangement of tubercles on the tail (Ref. 85070).
