Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; nigrispina: Name from Latin 'nigra' for black and 'spina' for backbone, referring to the black pigment extending along the backbone; an adjective.

This species has dorsal to anal fin-ray formula 8/8; unbranched pectoral-fin rays; when alive or fresh, there is a distinct black stripe along the backbone and when preserved, with a strong black pigment along scale pockets on the ventral half of the sides (Ref. 85481).
