Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817);  chebera: The species name chebera is in reference to Chebera-Churchura national park, the locality in which the type series was collected (Ref. 84041).

Spine dorsali (totale) : 0; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 10; Spine anali: 0; Raggi anali molli: 7. Diagnosis: This species is unique among African Garra in possession of 2 simple and 13 branched rays on the pectoral fin and 1 simple and 8 branched rays on the pelvic fin (Ref. 84041). In addition, it is distinguished from African congeners by the following combination of features: well-developed, large papillate type C disc; fully scaled predorsal region and scaled post pelvic region; unscaled chest and belly; vent located close to anal fin, vent distance 13.2-24.2% of the distance between anal and pelvic fin origins; and intestine long, standard length 28.4-42.0% of intestine length (Ref. 84041).

Found in slow flowing pools over sandy substrate, with dense woody river bank vegetation and complete shade at zenith; mean depth of 25 cm, water temperature of 18.3°C and flow rate of 1.3 m/s (Ref. 84041).
