This species is distinct in having large spines at the posterior and lower margins of the praeoperculum; angular part of praeoperculum with an unspined notch; ventral fins insertion is at the level or slightly behind the vertical of the posterior margin of the pectoral fin insertion; upper jaw extends to the vertical of the posterior eye margin; soft rays in the dorsal fin 12, anal fin 9; first branchial arch with 28-31 rakers; vertebrae 28-31; pyloric caeca 7-8 (Ref. 83719).
