Etymology: Lepidocephalichthys: Greek, lepas = limpet + Greek, ichtys = fish (Ref. 45335); kranos: Kranos is Greek for helmet, in reference to the large, exposed scales on the top of the head (Ref. 83671).

Lepidocephalichthys kranos occurs in the Chao Phraya drainage in Thailand and the Mekong drainage in Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, where it seems to be common and often found with L. hasselti. It is common in paddy fields, slow-flowing streams, and ponds, and is typically found in habitats with dense vegetation. (Ref. 83671).

Lepidocephalichthys kranos is distinguished from all other members of Lepidocephalichthys by the combination of large, exposed scales on top of head; dorsal-fin origin just anterior to pelvic-fin origin; moderate/large size (to 44 mm SL); truncated or slightly emarginated caudal fin; ‘‘hunched’’ body shape (body depth increasing rapidly from snout to pectoral-fin origin); large muscular nape marking end of scaled head; thin, dark, interrupted stripe along side of body present in both sexes (Ref. 83671).
