Diagnosed from congeners in Balkan Peninsula by having the following characters: origin of anal fin below branched dorsal ray 4-7; lateral line with 49+ 2-3 scales; anal fin with 14-17½ branched rays; 18-25 gill rakers; ventral keel exposed for 8-12 scales in front of anus; caudal peduncle depth 1.7-2.1 times in its length; lacking or only faint dark lateral stripe (more distinct in preserved individuals) (Ref. 59043).
This species inhabits open waters of medium to large rivers, where it forages close to surface (Ref. 59043).
