Etymology: Jupiaba: An indigenous word from Brazil, in the region where Angela (Ichthyologist) was born and discovered several new fishes. Distinguished from all species of the genus and from all remaining characids by having a unique color pattern consisting of the combination of presence of a conspicuous, narrow dark midlateral stripe, a single elongated humeral spot, and upper caudal-fin lobe and middle
caudal-fin rays dark, with a clear, rounded ocellated spot present dorsally at anterior third of caudal-fin lobe (Ref. 81201).
Collected from a black-water, terra-firme forest stream about 4-5 m wide and 0.5-1.0 m deep, with a predominantly sandy bottom. Also found in a large oxbow lake (Ref. 81201).
