Etymology: Zaireichthys: Composed form Zaire river + Greek,ichtys = fish; the habitat of this fish (Ref. 45335).

Issue
It is probably a synonym of Zaireichthys rotundiceps (Ref. 51287, 78218). But it is retained as valid because the types are "closely similar, possibly conspecific" (Ref. 58032).
