Can be diagnosed based on its karyotypic formula: 2n = 50 (8 m + 18 sm + 24 sta), NF =76 (Ref. 76903). Distinguished from other species of the genus Cobitis in the following set of characteristics diagnostic for the species Cobitis melanoleuca: Canestrini’s organ in males is narrow, bottle-shaped, its plate usually extends no far than to the end of the third segment of fin ray articulated with it; near the base of caudal fin there are two elongated dark spots often connected with each other; scales small, oval, with a large center not covered with transverse furrows and a small number of rings (less than ten, more often four to five) along the margin (Ref. 76903).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00562 (0.00254 - 0.01244), b=3.05 (2.87 - 3.23), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this Genus-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Niveau trophique (Ref. 69278):  3.2   ±0.4 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Résilience (Ref. 120179):  Haut, temps minimum de doublement de population inférieur à 15 mois (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
