Diagnosed from other congeners by the following combination of characters: posterior border of preopercle serrated; scales in E1 row 48-51; isognathous jaws or slightly prognathous upper jaw; suborbital stripe present; flanks with five or six dark rectangular blotches just below the upper lateral line along dorsal-fin base; and vertical stripes absent (Ref. 75970).
