Etymology: Rajella: Latin, raja, -ae = a sting ray (Raja sp.) (Ref. 45335); challengeri: Named for FRV Challenger, used to survey the deepwater demersal fish resources of Tasmania in the 1980s.
Eponymy: This species is named after the Tasmanian fisheries research vessel ’Challenger’ (named after its famous antecedent, see below), which was used to survey deep-water fish resources off Tasmania (1980s). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
